An Important Achievement: ‘HUMIDBLOC’: Twenty years after.
Rising damp has always been a serious problem for the upkeep of buildings: engineers architects and experts have searched for a lasting solution, but until a short time ago there were no permanent remedies. Research programmes, however, have continued, and in the last ten years several prevention methods have been patented. One of the most successful methods has been produced by HUMIDBLOC, a firm in Cassano d’Adda (Milan – Italy) which celebrates twenty years activity this year.
This method proposes a permanent solution to the problem of rising damp: work carried out twenty years ago is still resistant and is sure to be for a long time still. As the patent HUMIDBLOC has been so successful many noteworthy experts have become involved in the project and this year Francesco Mazzola, engineer and owner of the firm in Cassano d’Adda (Milan- Italy) , has been teaching in the Milan University as Professor of Building Restoration: to quote Mr Mazzola “ The solution to rising damp in walls has been one of the most important projects of HUMIDBLOC .Our patents with chemical sealers and electrical-osmotics can be adapted to all situations and they do not require devastating intervention.
On the other hand during this period and particularly since 1983 when we appeared on the market HUMIDBLOC has gained great experience and is now able to resolve every kind of problem, however difficult, in the building field. The specialised work carried out overcomes obstacles which at first glance might seem very expensive and time-consuming ,but we try to achieve our aims in the most simple and rational ways. We avoid excessive scaffolding and cumbersome and expensive machinery, we do apply advanced technology for the best results :all this is done with minimum effort and maxim results. ”If we acknowledge that this minimum effort is accompanied by reduced costs we can deduce that the solution to apparently impossible problems which also require complicated machinery, can be obtained with a small workforce and at reasonable cost.
During the last twenty years HUMIDBLOC has completed more than 1700 restoration works (one of the most important being the church of San Babila in Milan, the sanctuary of Corbetta and the vaults of the Church of Loreto in Marche Region). In 1990, the Cassano d’Adda Firm, using their own special technology, restored the mosaic of Mario Sironi “L’Italia Corporativa”, which is found on the fifth floor of Palazzo dei Giornali , in Milan. This work was carried out without the closure of the building, because a mobile scaffolding, 12 metres long and 65 centimeters wide was hung and this permitted the restorers space to work. The main characteristic of the scaffolding was that it was covered by information regarding the work taking place. The next initiative was also in Milan: in Piazza Missori to reopen the building site for the Milan underground, this permitted the removal of 16 meters of Roman road.
HUMIDBLOC carried out the work without damaging the tram lines nearby. Once more in Milan, in Via del Gesů at the “Regent Hotel” (part of the Four Seasons
chain),there was a room, protected by the national heritage, with a 15th century vaulted ,decorated ceiling which was in danger of collapsing. To utilise the room a restoration of the ceiling had to be carried out , but no-one was able to complete the work without damaging it HUMIDBLOC held up the ceiling with a pneumatic support ,thanks to which the reconstruction work was carried out without damaging the original structure. After the work was completed the room became one of the most expensive suites in the world: 1900,000 lire a night. The most highly regarded work carried out by the Cassano firm is the reconstruction of the Assicurazioni Generali building in Beirut,in front of the Parliament. As the building was constructed on Roman remains the work took three years of considerable effort. It was necessary to redistribute the weight of the foundations which had been laid in1935 above “The Cardo Massimo”, the imperial road which linked the city to Damascus.
To conclude, thanks to the continued effort in the field of advanced technology, Mr Mazzola has recently inaugurated a number of engineering projects relevant to the seismic isolation of historic monuments. Taking into account these results ENEA (State Scientific Agency) has requested their collaboration in a project to isolate some monuments in Umbria and Marche to protect them in the case of earthquakes (while for some time the firm has been collaborating with CNR to prevent rising damp). HUMIDBLOC organises all aspects of the work, diagnosing the problem, evaluating the solution, establishing the project of work to be done and carrying it out directly or with the aid of other firms which form part of the group. All the work completed with the HUMIDBLOC patent is guaranteed for twenty years. One of the main specialities of HUMIDBLOC is the elimination of leakage in the underground layers of structures by injecting gelatinous harmless products which do not pollute or destroy the ground.
HUMIDBLOC has also consolidated a very long experience in concrete, steel and timber structures carbon fiber reinforcement in situ, without dismantling damaged components.
HUMIDBLOC has a know-how and 100% biodegradable products for environment cleaning and protection against oil and smell pollution of sea water or sand /rock beaches.
